Irregular Periods: Common Causes and When to See a Doctor

A practical guide to changes in cycle timing, possible causes, first tests and warning signs for women in Bhopal.

If the number of days between periods keeps changing, it helps to look at the pattern rather than one date on a calendar. An occasional early or late period can happen. Repeated changes, missed periods, bleeding between periods or a new change after previously predictable cycles deserves a conversation with a clinician.

What counts as a change?

Count from the first day of bleeding to the first day of the next period. Note how many days bleeding lasts, how often you need to change pads, and whether pain or spotting has changed. A short note on your phone is enough. Cycle patterns vary with age, especially in the first years after a girl's first period and during perimenopause.

Why might periods become irregular?

Pregnancy is an important possibility if it could apply to you, even when symptoms feel like an ordinary period problem. Other possible causes include stress, weight change, intense exercise, thyroid problems, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), medicines, hormonal contraception and the menopause transition. A symptom alone cannot establish which of these is responsible.

The history guides any tests. A clinician may ask about pregnancy possibility, changes in weight or medicines, acne or increased facial hair, thyroid symptoms, and whether bleeding is unusually heavy. Testing might include a pregnancy test or blood tests; an ultrasound is considered when the history or examination makes it useful. There is no routine panel that everyone needs.

When should you seek care?

Book an assessment if the irregularity keeps recurring, you have missed three periods, bleeding interrupts daily life, or you have new spotting between periods. Seek urgent help if bleeding is very heavy, you feel faint, have severe pelvic pain, or have pain or bleeding with a possible pregnancy. Bleeding after menopause always needs medical assessment.

Bring your cycle dates and prior reports to the visit. Dr. Rina Kanungo can help with an initial evaluation at R.K. Hospital in Indrapuri and advise when gynaecology review is needed.
